Elizabeth McLaughlin Career

Elizabeth McLaughlin Elizabeth McLaughlin The Clique I scored the part of Massie by embracing her as a person. I’ve been a huge fan of the books since I was in 7th grade, and had read all of them. I KNEW Massie. I knew who she was, what she's about, what she was thinking, and WHY she does the sometimes horrible things she does. She is your average teenage girl, only a little more intensified. Although some say she is the meanest character in Teen Literature, she really just wants to be liked, and she'll do whatever it takes to get on top. Massie is a little self-conscious, and since her biggest success in life is being the most popular girl at OCD [Octavian Country Day, Massie's school], she will not lose it, no matter what. She may be mean, but under it all she's just afraid to lose what she has.

My attorney, who takes care of my contracts, is also the attorney for Lisi Harrison (the writer of the book series) as well. So, after I booked “The Clique,” he arranged me to have lunch with her. I traveled on down to Laguna Beach and met her at this adorable little café. We chatted about the books, and the upcoming movie, and quickly became good friends. We still e-mail and text today. :-)

Becoming Massie Block

Elizabeth McLaughlin I made Massie into a human 12-year-old girl from the fictionalized character that Lisi Harrison perfected. I tried to think of the girls I knew personally who acted like Massie and did things like her. I took mannerisms from them and intensified them. But overall, I worked really hard to translate her correctly so that the fans wouldn't be disappointed. :-)

Massie is such an intense and overly dramatic Mean Girl. So as apart of my preparation for this role, I thought of all the mean girls I’ve met over the years and thought about how they treated people, and I incorporated that into my acting. I also went to the mall in character as Massie Block. I acted just how she would act, and you wouldn’t believe the condescending looks I got! Hahaha. On top of it all, the best preparation I did was re-reading all of “The Clique” series to know Massie better.

I have a lot in common with Massie. We're both natural born leaders, and we both strive to be the best at what we do. I happen to be a bit of a drama queen, and Massie is the Queen of Drama Queens. I also have a sensational group of best friends, just as she does. And not to toot my own horn, but we both have an eye-catching sense of style. ;-)

The Pretty Committee

Elizabeth McLaughlin The Pretty Committee is your typical clique. Not only do they have the style that rules the The Pretty Committee is your typical clique. Not only do they have the style that rules the school, but the attitude to match. There's every type of girl in the Pretty Committee. Massie: The Queen Bee, who has to rule and do it all; Alicia: The Sultry Beauty who makes every boy weak in the knees; Dylan: The slightly dim-witted, but loveable gal who eats her heart out; Kristen: The Academic and Sport obsessed good girl; and Claire: The innocent, adorable girl who is always a little bit on the outside. I'm probably the most like Layne, who also happens to be my favorite. She's not afraid to the dance of her own beat, she's a complete original. Just like me. :-)

As for their insider language? Eh Ma Gawd, are you a GLU or a LBR? Hahahaha. “The Clique” lingo is all it’s own. I think it adds to the story, considering a lot of teenage girls use language similar to this.

The Cast

Elizabeth McLaughlin The cast and I became very close while filming “The Clique.” On set, it was all business, but off set, we were just a bunch of teenage girls. One night, we had a sleepover, just like the Pretty Committee, in one of the girls’ room. After watching a movie, and playing with Photo booth on our computers, we needed something to do. So at about 1am we decided to be spies and snuck over to our director’s room. While filming it, we tee-peed our director’s room door. In the morning we edited our video and added the “Mission Impossible” theme. The entire shooting schedule was filled with that kind of fun.

My Favorite Scene

It’s a toss up between two scenes, the first one being the opening scene. It’s so overly dramatic and was so much fun to shoot. I had to scream for so long as the camera was pulling into my face, then I basically got to throw a temper tantrum, and call up the girls and command them to do my bidding. Fun, right?? The second one is right after I gain The Pretty Committee’s friendship again after Claire has schemed them away from Massie. After I throw an egg at Claire, I fix my hair and wink at TPC before saying, “I am so back.” It was so amazing because during rehearsal, I added the hair-flip and wink on my own because it wasn’t in the script and Michael Lembeck (our director) noticed me doing it, and loved it so much he insisted I put it in the movie! So I love the fact that something I made up ended up in the movie on its own. :D

About The Clique Movie

Meet The Clique, where the only thing harder than getting in is staying in. Based on The New York Times best-selling book series by Lisi Harrison, Warner Premiere’s production of The Clique is a humorous look at the fashionable life of Massie Block, the most popular seventh grade girl at Westchester’s exclusive Octavian Country Day school, and her BFFs Alicia, Dylan and Kristen, aka The Pretty Committee. Enter Claire Lyons, the new girl in a “fashion don’t” outfit and two-year-old sneakers -- clearly not top clique material.  Unfortunately for her, Claire’s family is staying in the guest house on Massie’s huge family estate.  With no way to avoid The Clique and eager to fit in, Claire’s future looks worse than a Prada knockoff… but with a little confidence and a lot of scheming, she just might stand a chance.
